This week we welcomed almost 100 parents, grandparents, parishioners and community members for St Joseph’s Day 2022. The junior and senior choir led the singing and performed beautifully and our year 1 students told us about all the reasons why they love St Joseph’s.
After the Liturgy, the children were so excited to be able to show off their classrooms to their visitors. Our wonderful parents, Mrs Hockham and Mr Davis, cooked up a storm on the BBQ and we shared lunch in the glorious sunshine.
We finished the day with sports and games lead by our Year 6 students who created and set up every game before showing each class how to play. We were so impressed with our leaders for leading both the liturgy and the sports afternoon.
Thank you to Emma and the canteen crew and to all the parents, staff and students who made this a wonderful community day.
Family Mass
We welcome everyone to Saturday Mass at 5pm where our choir students will lead the singing again. (Please arrive by 4:55). The Mass starts by kneeling in silence during Lent. Children can wear smart casual clothes and if they are singing, are welcome to sit with the choir or near the back on the right. The aim of this mass is to encourage those in year 3 to 6 who have made or who are making their Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist, to partake in mass and to be surrounded by a community of their peers. Dinner will follow for those who have booked at Kew Hotel.
NAPLAN
NAPLAN is the national literacy and numeracy assessment that students in Primary school do in years 3 and 5 in May each year. It is the only national assessment that all Australian students do. NAPLAN assesses the literacy and numeracy skills that students learn through the school curriculum and gives feedback to parents about how their child is progressing over time and against national and school standards and averages. NAPLAN is just one form of assessment and data collection that we use amongst other classroom, school and wider standardised assessments.
Next week on Thursday 24th at 11:30 all year 3 and 5 students will sit a practice test to allow students an opportunity to trial using the devices and the software platform that are used for the actual tests next term. The practice test is not marked or recorded and students are supported in the process of understanding what to do. Further information about this test and NAPLAN in general has been provided to families via this schoolzine link. If you have any further questions about your child sitting NAPLAN this year, please contact your child’s Class Teacher.
Staff Development Days
We would like to remind parents/carers of the upcoming Pupil Free Days:
Friday 8 April ( last day of term 1) - Staff Spirituality Day
Tuesday 26 April ( first day of Term 2) - Staff Professional Learning Day
Homeroom App
Earlier this week we sent a notification to all K-2 families about reinstating the Homeroom App to share photos and videos from the classrooms. This is NOT for years 3-6. More information can be found on the letter already sent below.Supervision Times
Just a friendly reminder that supervision starts at 8:30 am. If you need care before this time, please use GOWRIE before and after school care.
Best wishes from the leadership team

Years 5 and 6 have been invited to submit a team into the Lismore Diocese ESports Competition!
ESports is short for Electronic Sports and is a form of competition using video games where players compete against each other for the title of ESports Champion. The first competition will involve our team competing against other schools within the Lismore Diocese using Mario Kart as the platform and a Nintendo Switch as the device.
Being very popular, we are currently holding a ‘knock out’ competition during lunchtime to select the best team to represent our school. Students have been very excited and I’m looking forward to announcing our selected team in the coming weeks.
Good luck gamers!
Mrs Hayward
Congratulations to Ruby Whitelaw (Year 6) who represented Hasting Zone in Touch Football yesterday. Ruby played extremely well and was short-listed in the top 18 players to make the Diocesan team. Although she missed out on final selections, we are very proud of Ruby and she says she learned a lot from this great experience.
Easter Raffle Update
Thank you to everyone who has donated Easter Eggs or funds through Flexischools to purchase them. We have had a great response so far. We will continue to take donations until Friday 25th March.
In addition, we have also had a great uptake of online raffle ticket orders. Today we will be sending home with the kids, paper raffle tickets. We understand that some families have requested these to sell to other family members or friends.
- Raffle tickets are $1 each and 5 tickets are attached for your family to purchase, if you’d like to
- More tickets are available from the office if required
- Please return your tickets to the office by Tuesday 29th March this includes unsold tickets)
The Easter Raffle will be drawn at the school assembly on Thursday 7th April.
Thanks again to everyone for helping to make the Easter Raffle a great success.
The students have asked that we do a Flood Fundraiser for the families who have been impacted by Floods. The Mini Vinnies Team will still be holding a Project Compassion Fundraiser later in the term.
On Friday 25th March, we will be holding a footy coin line fundraiser.
What to do: Wear your favourite footy jersey or colours (or any sporting team).
Bring: Coins to add to your favourite team's line.

As a parent I am constantly trying to think of new options and ideas for the canteen that are convenient for parents and exciting for children, therefore I'm excited to announce that the canteen is now offering a fruit break option through flexischools! Frozen pineapple rings will be available from the canteen for 30c as a fruit break special on Mondays and Fridays, these will be delivered to the classrooms for morning fruit break.
Hi Families,
As we are halfway through term one, I was hoping parents would be happy to fill in a short survey for me about the canteen.
As the canteen is a service run for the students and staff of our school I would love to get some feedback from everyone.
Is there anything you feel could be improved? Is there something your child is loving or is there something you would love to see added?!
Below is a link to the 5 question survey that will only take a minute to do!

Thanks as always!

To help assist our students in accessing curriculum content, the CSO has purchased a subscription to TextHelp which is available for all students to use.
In the classroom we have been using these Google extensions to help students with their learning. One example of how classes have taken advantage of TextHelp is by using the Google Read & Write extension to read text students have typed themselves, back to them. When listening to their own writing, they are able to recognise spelling and punctuation errors and self correct these without waiting for a teacher conference.
The good news is that your child can also access these extensions at home using their school login information. If you would like further information on using TextHelp at home, please refer to the poster below or email the school and I will get back to you as soon as I am able.
Kind regards,

On Monday, our students from K-6 had the pleasure of watching and participating in a play by Starr Productions called ‘Young Mary’.
Rebecca and Glen entertained us by portraying a variety of characters who played a part of the life and formation of Mary MacKillop, Australia’s first saint.
They took us on a journey of Mary’s life, from when she was a young girl and how she raised her brothers and sisters, to when she was ordained a Josephite sister and worked hard to provide all children with an education, regardless of their wealth and status.
The students were thoroughly engaged, enjoying the audience participation, and the Q and A at the end. Starr productions brought Mary Mackillop’s story to life for us and we all left with her words to “Never see a need without doing something about it”.

YEAR 7 2023
Acting College Principal Mrs Tanya Daley and Assistant Principal Mrs Jennifer Furney will meet with all St Joseph’s Laurieton Year 6 students on Wednesday 23rd March 2022 to:
- Outline the enrolment and orientation process
- Distribute Information Packages
- Explain the zones for each College
The Year 7 2023 Information and Open Evenings will be held at:
St Joseph’s Regional College Hall on Tuesday, 3rd May commencing at 5.00pm
Children are encouraged to attend.

Year 3 have been experimenting with repeating and growing patterns using skittles!

I think it’s safe to say, we’ve all had enough of this weather.. and so has our plants!
On Tuesday, Stage 2 Science students were set the task to design and make a Greenhouse for a seedling to thrive in. We had some wonderful designs and we will continue to monitor these greenhouses and their seedlings over the coming weeks to observe and evaluate just how successful they are!
Thank you to the wonderful Lou O’Neill for organising a cabbage, snow peas, lettuce, celery, beans and soil. Thank you to Bec & Aunty Lynda for assisting the students today and thank you to the students (and parents) for bringing all their supplies in.
As part of our Mission goal in 2022, we want to give students the opportunities to authentically connect with their faith. We will continue Children’s Liturgies at Kendall but a new initiative is to have a family mass once per term followed by a family dinner. This mass is aimed at older students in years 3-6 who have made or will be making their sacraments, however, everyone is welcome.
Next Saturday 19th March will be the first Mass and Dinner. The junior and senior choir will be singing for us too, so that will be very special.
We have booked a big table, but if you would like to join us, please just ring the Kew Hotel and book a table under “The Choir” and they will join the table on. This is not really for the choir, it’s just our code name. So far we have 20 people booked in.
Any questions, please contact Maria Wilson.
