It was wonderful to see so many parents/carers at the Parent Education Session about the new K - 2 Syllabus and Class Parent Information Nights. We would like to thank all the staff for the time and energy they spent organising and hosting these sessions and all the parents/carers for continuing to support them. We would also like to say a huge thank you to Emma Hockham for coordinating the BBQ on the night and to all the staff who assisted with the babysitting in the library.
As a school, we are always looking for ways to improve these sessions to increase school partnerships with our families. For those who attended the Parent Information Night, we would love to hear your feedback on what was valuable and what we could include next time or follow up with more information. Please click on the link to share your feedback ideas.
Today we held our Opening School Mass. Thank you to all the families who were able to attend. Father Michael welcomed everyone, especially the Kindergarten students who got to stand on the seats to say "hello". We also commissioned our Year 6 students into their leadership roles and Father Michael talked to the students about "servant leadership". Well done to all our helpers and our choir who have worked hard to learn 5 songs this week.

Next week, we have another busy week in the term calendar. The season of Lent begins with Ash Wednesday, our parent-to-teacher interviews commence, and we have a Family School Partnership night in the library on Wednesday evening.
Lent is the season of reflection and preparation before Easter, and its observance culminates in the solemn celebrations of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil, which lie at the heart of the Catholic year. In Catholic tradition, Lent is marked by fasting, reflection, giving to others and deepening our sacramental living, especially in Reconciliation. In schools, children are reminded to 'give up something' or 'think of others' in building an understanding of the inner life needed by a maturing Christian.
As communicated by our class teachers during the Parent Information Night, you are invited to come along and meet with or have a phone chat with your child’s class teacher. This is an opportunity to pass on any relevant information about how your child learns best, any adjustments you feel they need in the classroom, wellbeing concerns, questions or clarification you need or anything else that may be relevant to supporting your child at school. Interview times may be booked online. If you would like this to be over the phone, please make sure you communicate this to the class teacher via email with your best contact number for the time to call. Parent to Teacher Interviews
As last week's newsletter mentioned, we will be holding a Family School Partnership night on Wednesday in the library. All interested families, past P & F members and class parents are welcome to come along. On this night, we will continue our discussions about a new P&F model that the Diocese proposed in 2022 that focuses less on fundraising and more on friend-raising to strengthen our strong, connected, and supportive community here at St Joseph's Laurieton. The night will be led by our Family School Partnership officers from the CSO, Janita Thomson and Hilary Shultz. Nibbles and babysitting will be provided on the night. To help with planning, please RSVP here.
Best wishes from the leadership team

Zone Winter Trials - Monday
Just a few things in regards to next Monday’s Zone Winter trials. All students are to be at the grounds by 9.15am and sign in with Mr Marshall at St Joseph’s Regional and with Bec Faddy at the basketball stadium. Students are to come dressed in their sports uniform. Football/soccer boots can be worn when playing (pack them in their school bag). For those students playing Rugby League, a mouthguard is mandatory. Games will begin at 9.30am and finish for parent pick up at 1.30pm. Students will need to bring their own recess, lunch and drinks. Remember also sunscreen, hat and water bottle.
Zone Swimming - Tuesday
Good luck to our school swimming squad as they attend the Zone swimming carnival held in Macksville next Tuesday. The teachers in charge for the day will be Mrs Koenig and Mrs Hayward. A note has been sent with details of the day.
Incitare - Year 6
At St Joseph's we offer a range of retreat experiences for small groups and whole classes. Incitare is one of these faith experiences. More information can be found on the following link. Nominations need to be done by 3:30 pm on Monday 20th February.
Welcome, Club!
Each morning (except Tuesdays), we offer a welcome club area on the playground side of the hall from 8:30. This is in place of our Early Bird Reading just for Term 1. We have books laid out on a comfy mat, along with colouring and drawing materials. Anyone is invited to come along and read, chat, draw, and hang out with other students or as a family. If your child is a little hesitant transitioning into school or would like something a bit more structured to do in the mornings before the bell rings, come along and join in.
NAPLAN
This year the National Assessment Program for students in years 3 and 5 will be scheduled much earlier. The key dates will be during week 7 this term with testing on three days from Wednesday 15th March. The assessments are all online (except writing in year 3) and our students have already begun practice tests and preparation in class. For further information, please read the additional information in this link or contact your child’s class teacher for any questions.
Family Connections and Support
Parents and carers should contact the class teacher about their child’s general well-being. The Parent to Teacher meetings is a good opportunity to discuss your child’s needs.
We also offer a range of services for students who need higher levels of care. This includes well-being groups, short-term counselling, and for matters related to bigger issues such as support to find housing, help getting into Paediatricians, help dealing with centrelink or other agencies, our Family Connect Service is also available. Jericho is the Family Connect worker at our school.

Kilometre Club is coming to St Joseph’s!
We are excited to announce that Kilometre Club is coming to St Joseph’s!
What is Kilometre Club?
Kilometre Club is an initiative to promote health and well being in students by encouraging them to run 1km several times a week.
How does it work?
At St Joseph's, students will be encouraged to run 4 or more laps of a 250m course located on school grounds Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings between 8:35-8:50am. This will start next week with the first session to be held on Wednesday the 22nd of February.
For each lap of the course (marked out with cones), students will receive a paddle pop stick to mark each lap of the course. Once four paddle pop sticks (four laps) have been completed, they will be awarded a 1km stamp on their Kilometre Club record card. Awards will be presented in class for 5km, 10km, 20km, 50km, 75km with a special assembly award presented to each student achieving 100km!
Get involved!
Mrs Fiona Hayward will run the event each Monday, Wednesday and Thursday morning however, parent help is appreciated and will assist in the smooth running of Kilometre Club. Parents are welcome to sign in on arrival and assist by:
- Joining in and running the course with your child
- Monitor turning points to ensure children are running outside the cones and not 'cutting corners'
- Handing out paddle pop sticks to students who have completed a lap
- Marking off student record cards
Additional information on Kilometre Club in general and the benefits for children in participating in regular physical exercise can be found at the following website: https://mnclhd.health.nsw.gov.au/healthy-living/programs/kilometre-club-hub/
If you would like to volunteer, send an email to fiona.hayward@lism.catholic.edu.au or simply turn up!
COMPASS
St Joseph's school will be undertaking a roll out of a new system called COMPASS - School Management System, which will go live at the commencement of Term 2. https://www.compass.education/
What does this mean for Parents? It means that parents will have one platform to oversee all their needs. Compass will replace Schoolzine.
Compass includes many different features, including the ability to:
- Monitor your child’s attendance, and enter an explanation for absence or lateness
- Communicate with your child’s teachers, and update your family contact details
- View your child’s timetable (high school) and the school calendar
- Monitor your child’s homework and assessment tasks (high school)
- Download and view your child’s academic reports
- Book parent-teacher conferences
- Pay and provide consent for events and school fees
- Purchase uniforms TBC
- Order from the Canteen TBC
Once all the behind-the-scenes work is complete, the Diocese will be helping parents to access the new system before Term 2.
Stage 1 Science
Year 1 and Year 2 scientists investigated the different types of creatures that visit us and live in our school playground as part of our Science unit Creature Features. Creeping quietly around the playground, they saw various creatures, such as plovers, kookaburras, water dragons, bees, dragonflies, and spiders. They used magnifying glasses to carefully search for insects and lizards in the different spaces of our school playground. We will use this data to start classifying the creatures we found in a variety of ways.
