What a fantastic start to 2023! We have been so impressed with how quickly the students have settled back into classroom routines and daily school life. We have also enjoyed visiting the classrooms throughout the week and hearing about everyone's holiday stories.
Another week's highlight was meeting all our new Kindergarten students, parents/carers, and grandparents at the special Kindergarten assembly and morning tea today. It was hard to judge who was the most excited, the new students, the older siblings, the Kinder teachers, the Year Six Buddies, or some parents who had children up since the early hours, dressed and waiting to start their new adventure. Despite a few tears from parents and children, the day ran smoothly with a combination of work, play, storytime, craft, dancing, and meeting new friends. Congratulations to our Kindy team: Mrs Carlie Dedal, Mrs Leah Toole, Ms Hilary Burch, Ms Sharni Pollard, and all the other staff who helped ensure the smiling faces continued throughout the day.

The new school year can be both exciting and stressful for students (and parents too). To assist our families in starting the year off well, we have linked a flyer with some tips to help your child (ren) have a successful year.

MAI Assessments
Thank you to the teaching staff and parents for all your support with students participating in their Maths Assessment Interviews. These one-to-one assessment times were valuable for teachers to understand and collate data about what students deeply understand about Mathematical concepts across counting, place value, addition and subtraction, and multiplication and division. It is also an opportunity for teachers to check in with students on how they have been feeling getting ready to start the new school year and to hear lots of holiday stories. Feedback to parents on how to support your child’s mathematical development, as a result of the assessment, will be sent home in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, teachers will use this information to plan their Mathematics programs.
Well-Being Referral
Sometimes things can happen over the holidays that affect your child's well-being. They may need some extra care and support as they transition back to school. If you or your family has experienced loss or anything that affects your child's well-being, please let their teacher know or call the office. Alternatively, our well-being referral is on the school website and can be accessed anytime. https://www.larplism.catholic.edu.au/student-wellbeing
Best wishes from the leadership team

Road Safety- Returning to school safely.
As we return to school, it is important to keep road safety around our school and in the community in mind. Please remember or familiarise yourself with our pick up and drop off routines with your children and our traffic and parking rules when driving through the carpark. There are also some returning to school safety tips to read through.
Happy first week back to everyone! I am feeling refreshed and looking forward to another big year!
Parent Information Night.
At the beginning of each new school year, we like to connect with and keep parents as informed as possible about your child’s classroom routines, learning, and events. Each class will have a Parent Information Night on Wednesday 15th, February (week 3). Each Class Teacher will present a 30-minute talk on topics such as their classroom routines, expectations, curriculum content, and communication in each of the classrooms. This year, we will also be presenting a special Parent Education session in the hall for all parents of students in Kindergarten, Years 1 and 2, about changes to the new curriculum in English and Mathematics and how to support home reading with these recent changes. Please see the times for this session and the class sessions below. We understand that some families will have students in the classes with sessions on at the same time, so we will provide handouts. We will also provide a sausage sizzle for all families, with the costs covered by the school. We hope to see as many families as possible in attendance to start the year off in great partnership in learning.
Parent Information Night Wednesday 15th February
4:30-5:00- K,Yr1, Yr2 Parent Education session in hall
5:15-5:45 K, Yr1, Yr5, Yr6 Class Information sessions
5:45-6:15 Yr2, Yr3, Yr4 Class Information sessions
In the week following this Parent Information Night, we will be offering ‘Parent to Teacher’ meetings for any parents who would like to talk to your child’s Class Teacher about your child and how they learn best, and any well-being or other matters that they will need to know. Parents with students who have additional needs and Indigenous students will be invited to a meeting with relevant staff around this time as well. We will send out booking information about this soon.
Family Pool Night
Please save the date for our first social gathering of the year on Thursday, 2nd March, at Kendall Pool for our Family Pool Night. This is an excellent opportunity to reconnect with other families at the school, mingle with our school staff and meet and welcome new families to our school community. We will offer a sausage sizzle BBQ, and kids can swim and play on the Aquascramble. The pool entry, aqua scramble, and food costs will be communicated shortly.
We hope to see as many families as possible come along to a fun and fantastic family night!

Please remember that if children need to bring phones or phone watches to school, they need to be handed into the office before 9 am and be picked up at the end of the day. It is not appropriate for students to be receiving messages throughout the day. Watches that have a school mode that automatically turns off between 9-3 are allowed. Urgent messages can come through the office.
Students must wear their hats at recess and lunch. If they have lost their hat, then they need to play in the covered outdoor learning area (COLA) near the hall or join an indoor club.
Returning to School Primary
As children return to school, it is important to keep road safety in mind. Take time to talk with your children about travelling to and from school safely.
Here are some safety tips:
- Be alert and aware by travelling distraction-free. Ask children to take off their headphones when walking.
- Keep safe getting in and out of the car. Always use the door closest to the kerb.
- Keep safe getting on and off the bus.
- Wait at the bus stop and stand at least one step back from the edge of the road.
- Always meet your child at the bus stop. Never meet them on the opposite side of the road and call them across.
- Wait until the bus has gone, before you cross the road.
- Message to share with your children in Kindergarten to Year 2
Hold a grown-up’s hand when:
- you cross the road
- you’re on the footpath
- you’re in a car park
- Message to share with children in Years 3 to 6
- Use a safe place to cross the road. The fastest way, may not be the safest way.
- Stop! Look! Listen! Think! Every time you cross the road and keep checking until you safely across
STOP! one step back from the kerb
LOOK! continuously both ways
LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic
THINK! whether it is safe to cross and keep checking until safely across
- Wear a helmet. Children must wear a helmet when riding a bike in any public place – it’s the law. Foot scooter, skateboard and rollerblade riders should wear helmets and protective gear such as knee and elbow pads.
If your child travels independently to school, please talk to them about the route they take to ensure they are making safe decisions.
Be a positive role model when you are a pedestrian, passenger and driver. Children learn from what they see, as well as what we say.
Never sacrifice safety for convenience.
